World Health Organisation

Overview

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the leading authority on global health within the United Nations system, working to ensure that people everywhere can achieve the highest possible standard of health. Through its work, WHO supports countries in strengthening their healthcare systems, addresses both infectious outbreaks and long-term conditions, promotes healthier lifestyles, and responds to international emergencies. In this committee, delegates will explore these challenges and collaborate to find practical, balanced solutions that reflect the realities of global well-being today.

Topic overview

Pacific Island countries and territories have reported 16,502 confirmed cases and 17 deaths since the start of 2025, and is said to rise due to threats of climate change and global warming. In a region where health systems, infrastructure and general safety is heavily underdeveloped and poorly-recognised, this topic aims to develop elimination and control programmes, evaluate the effect, impact and outcome, and review mechanisms of selected international control initiatives.

As a delegate, you will consider the challenges and opportunities of integrating different control programmes by considering past cases and mapping, monitoring and surveilling the potential of such Neglected Tropical Diseases. Furthermore, we will consider the ramifications environmental and socioeconomic circumstances have on the topic at hand, looking at all aspects thoroughly.

We hope you enjoy this topic as much as we enjoyed preparing it for you!!

George Platt

Hiya
My name’s George and I’m a sixth-former in Bucharest. Alongside Maria, I will be one of the chairpersons of my favourite favourite favourite committee ever: WHO! I hate medicine, science, everything STEM related but I love the debate which ensues in such committees and I am sure that anyone willing to try one will find that same passion too. I am so so so glad to return to Galați to be able to chair this wonderful wonderful wonderful committee at this lovely lovely lovely conference, and I hope to see you all in May!

Maria Dicu

Heyy! I’m Maria, a junior at ‘Vasile Alecsandri’ National High School in Galați and I’m really excited to be part of the academic team this year and to chair one of the best committees, WHO, alongside George. I’ve always loved getting involved in debates and all kinds of global issues, so I can’t wait to see the ideas, arguments, and energy you will all bring into the room.

I’m really looking forward to meeting all of you and seeing how each of you approaches the topics in your own way. See you all in May!!
