Economic and Social Council
Overview
The United Nations Economic and Social Council, hereinafter ECOSOC, is one of six principal organs of the United Nations responsible for coordinating the economic and social fields of the organization, specifically in regards to the fifteen specialized agencies, the eight functional commissions, and the five regional commissions under its jurisdiction.
Beyond simple coordination, ECOSOC’s primary purpose is to serve as the UN’s central forum for addressing the world’s most pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges. It translates high-level mandates, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), into actionable policy guidance for member states.
Topic overview
Since its emergence in the 1970s, the fast fashion industry has fundamentally redefined global consumption, yet its rapid growth has come at a significant cost. While the sector provides millions of jobs and affordable apparel, this system forces a competition for the lowest possible costs, leading to poor working conditions and extremely low pay. In many developing nations, these meager wages keep workers stuck in poverty, making it nearly impossible for them to improve their lives despite their hard work. Economically, this model prioritizes short-term corporate gains over long-term stability, creating a systemic reliance on exploitation.
The environmental consequences are equally severe, with the industry accounting for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to massive textile waste and water scarcity. As pioneering states like France and Sweden implement legislative reforms to promote sustainability, the ECOSOC committee must now address this crisis through a multi-dimensional lens. By advocating for corporate transparency, incentivizing ethical production, and supporting circular economy initiatives, the international community can realign the fashion industry with the goals of social justice and environmental preservation.

Ilinca Ionașcu
Greetings, prospective delegates! My name is Ilinca, I am a sophomore at “Vasile Alecsandri” National College in Galați and it is my utmost pleasure to chair the ECOSOC committee alongside my dear colleagues, Adelina and Ruxandra!
My MUN journey started in May last year, at this very conference, which is why it holds such a special place in my heart. Ever since then, I’ve fallen in love with MUNs, as they have helped me not only develop my public speaking skills and critical thinking, but also meet wonderful people and create unforgettable memories.
Outside of debating, my interests consist in music, journaling and poetry. I’m also passionate about cinematography and learning other languages, such as French, which is one of my favourites.
With all this in mind, I hope that GalMUN 2026 will be a memorable experience for each and every one of you, and I’m looking forward to seeing you in May! 🤍
Adelina Elena Leonte
Greetings, everyone! My name is Adelina Leonte, I am a sophomore at “Vasile Alecsandri” National College in Galați, and it would be an understatement to say that I am honoured to serve as a Chairperson of the Economic and Social Council alongside my wonderful colleagues, Ilinca and Ruxandra.
My MUN journey began just over a year ago, as one of my very first conferences was GalMUN 2025. That experience will forever remain incredibly meaningful to me, as it introduced me to the world of debate and diplomacy. Ever since then, I have grown deeply passionate about MUNs, as they have allowed me to significantly improve my public speaking skills, gain valuable knowledge about geopolitics, and engage with incredible individuals. For these reasons, returning to this year’s edition of the conference in this position is both exciting and special to me.
On a more personal note, I am really passionate about singing and listening to music, allowing me to develop creativity, confidence and connect with people. Furthermore, one of the most important activities to me is volunteering, seeing as it has undoubtedly marked my personal development when it comes to leadership, team work and public speaking. As to the future, I aspire to pursue a career in medicine and put to use all of the skills earned throughout the years.
This being said, I am very much looking forward to meeting all of you and contributing to this unforgettable conference that I hope you will get to experience!💕🫶🏻
