United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
Overview
Drugs have always played a complicated role in society, being used to heal, to escape, to celebrate, even to survive. But in recent years, something deeper has shifted. More and more, drugs and substances are being treated not as tools for health or tradition, but as products to be branded, modified, and sold to the highest bidder. This process, known as commodification, goes far beyond the act of selling. It’s about how substances are changed to fit markets. Painkillers are reformulated for longer highs. Cannabis is packaged in sleek designs and sold in curated doses. Illegal drugs are modified to be stronger, cheaper, and more addictive. Behind every altered formula or catchy marketing campaign is a person managing chronic pain, battling addiction, or struggling to access basic healthcare. As the legal and illegal drug industries grow, so do the consequences. The same companies that profit from these substances often distance themselves from the harm they cause. And those most affected, especially in marginalized communities, are too often criminalized or ignored. In a world where drugs are increasingly designed for markets, how do we protect the people who need them most? Who is protected by current systems, and who is left behind? How are substances being reshaped to meet economic goals? Don’t miss the chance of signing up for the UNODC committee at this year’s edition on GalMUN!

Hi! I’m Lidia, a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, studying International Relations & Business, and I’m more than honored to chair the UNODC Committee alongside Delia. In the last few years, MUNs have become one of my passions, and I truly believe that this conference is a great opportunity for everyone to discover more about themselves and their limits. As your chairperson, I will make sure that you have a challenging environment of debate, lots of fun, and the chance not only to discover new people but also to develop yourself and your English and public speaking skills. As GalMUN marked the beginning of my journey as a chairperson, I am incredibly excited to be back. I look forward to seeing you all!Delia Mihăilă
I’m Delia, a junior at CNVA Galați, and I’m honored to be one of the chairpersons for the UNODC Committee at GALMUN this year. I have a strong passion for architecture, music, reading, and, most importantly, debating. The ability to express ideas, challenge perspectives, and engage in meaningful discussions has always fascinated me. As a chair, my goal is to create an environment where every delegate feels confident, inspired, and eager to participate. I believe that MUN is not just about debate but also about collaboration, diplomacy, and personal growth. I’m looking forward to meeting you all this May and making this an unforgettable experience together!
