Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee

Overview

The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (hereinafter SOCHUM) serves as the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. Its agenda includes, but is not limited to, promoting human rights, advocating for women’s and children’s rights, addressing the treatment of refugees and displaced populations and eliminating racism and discrimination. Moreover, SOCHUM also discusses issues related to indigenous rights and social development.

Established in 1948 alongside the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, SOCHUM was created in response to the humanitarian crises that followed World War II, with the goal of upholding fundamental freedoms and addressing social injustices. Over the decades, it has played a key role in shaping international human rights frameworks, supporting decolonization efforts and combating apartheid.

As global conflicts, political instability and migration pressures intensify, the issue of mass deportations in refugee crises has become a critical humanitarian concern. Forced removals often expose vulnerable populations to persecution, violence and economic hardship, violating fundamental human rights and destabilizing entire regions.

The international community must take urgent action to ensure that deportation policies align with humanitarian principles, preventing large-scale displacement from becoming humanitarian disasters. Additionally, the legal and ethical implications of mass deportations raise pressing questions about state responsibility and the protection of stateless individuals.

This committee will play a vital role in establishing frameworks and programs to address this complex issue, ensuring that deportation policies uphold international human rights standards while promoting stability for affected populations.

Chairpersons

Amira Bădescu

Hello everyone! My name is Amira, and I am a senior at “Vasile Alecsandri” National College in Galați. It is an honor to serve as one of the chairpersons for the SOCHUM Committee at the vicennial edition of GalMUN. MUNs have been a transformative part of my high school experience, honing my public speaking skills, broadening my worldview and introducing me to some of the most remarkable individuals I’ve had the privilege to call friends. Alas, as I approach the close of this chapter, I am excited to channel the knowledge I’ve gathered over the years to guide a new generation through the intricate yet incredible world of diplomacy and debate. I’m looking forward to seeing you all in May!

Lavinia Buzea

Hello everyone! My name is Lavinia, I’m a sophomore at “Vasile Alecsandri” National College and a creative and passionate MUNer who is honoured to be the chairperson of the SOCHUM committee as part of this edition of GalMUN. These types of conferences have been playing a key role in my formation as an individual and I am more than willing and excited to share this knowledge to the upcoming generations of participants. However, debating is not all I enjoy doing. I love psychology, economics and politics, while also being fond of spending time in nature, playing video games, creative writing and reading philosophy. Although I might sometimes seem a bit unapproachable, I love striking up conversations on any topic, with literally anyone and anything, so don’t be afraid to come and talk to me. I am very excited to meet all the delegates and I wish for the best experience for you, prospective delegates!
